As you may have already heard, HFS is celebrating our 80th Anniversary this year! As our way of saying thank you, we decided to perform some random acts of kindness all around the Big Island throughout the year. It’s a small way for us to give back to the Big Island communities that have trusted us with their financial needs since 1937. We wanted to share with you all the ways we were able to give back, check it out!
Zumba
One of our staff members attends a weekly zumba class and mentioned that there was a cost to each class that you attend. What a great opportunity to support community members as they work on their fitness goals! We showed up one day and surprised 6 Zumba students by giving them a complimentary Zumba class pass. Their next workout with the Hilo Chicas was on us!
Relay for Life
Next, we wanted to support a local cause: Relay for Life! We surprised three Team Captains at the May Relay meeting by paying for their American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) membership. ACS CAN is an organization dedicated to making cancer issues a national priority. Our 2017 Hilo Relay for Life event is working to become an ACS CAN event and we wanted to support that goal! Be sure to stop by and say hello at our HFS tent at the Hilo Relay for Life on Saturday, July 15th.
Keiki Day
Keiki Day was held on May 11th this year and we saw an opportunity to help out a great cause! We purchased 50 copies of the special Keiki Day edition of the Hawaii Tribune-Herald and took the opportunity to walk around downtown Hilo and Kea‘au Shopping Center handing out these newspapers to those in our community! Some very generous people even gave extra donations to support Hawaii’s youth.
National Donut Day
National Donut Day was on June 2nd, and we couldn’t let the day go by without celebrating! How did we celebrate? We gave away donuts to some of our local companies and vendors! We first visited Hilo Bake Company to pick up some delicious donuts, and they were generous enough to throw in a few extra when they heard about the acts of kindness. Mahalo Hilo Bake Company! After picking up the donuts we made deliveries to the folks at Pacific Media Group, Hawaii Printing, Sadorra Floral, Hawaii Tribune-Herald, and the Prince Kuhio Starbucks location to surprise them. Thank you so much to these companies for serving our local community!
Earl’s in Waimea
A stop for some delicious bento rolls at Earl’s in Waimea turned into a wonderful opportunity to surprise some community members! We were able to surprise 4 people by paying for their order, which for many of them was their lunch for that day. Every person we met was so wonderful and truly surprised!
Hina Rae’s
If you haven’t been to Hina Rae’s in Honoka‘a town, you should make a point to stop there the next time you’re passing through! As we visited, we stopped at Hina Rae’s to surprise a few people by paying for their order. The lovely ladies at the counter even let us pay for a couple of phone orders so the customer would be surprised when they came in to pick up their meal, and it was already paid for!
“A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees. The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind themselves.” – Amelia Earhart
