HFS Federal Credit Union has a long history of serving the Big Island; 84 years to be exact.

Since our founding on January 4, 1937, we have continued to expand to 6 locations island-wide to support our growing membership. Our existing office at 632 Kinoole Street was built in 1982 and back then we had 15 employees, approximately 9,200 members, and assets of $24 million. In the almost 40 years since, we have grown to 120 employees, over 50,000 members, and assets of $770 million. Due to this extensive growth, we have exceeded our capacity at our current office in Hilo.

We are pleased to announce and embark on the construction of a new building right next door to our current location on Kinoole Street. Chief Executive Officer of HFS FCU, Nathan Abe, shares – “the new building will provide for our continued growth in servicing our members’ financial needs.”

The new building will provide an additional 20,000 square feet, over two floors, which will allow us to expand future services to our members in the existing facility and provide ample room for current administrative and support staff in the new building. Construction will kick off this summer and tentatively be completed in the Fall of 2022.

As we celebrate this new milestone for our Credit Union, we’d like to say mahalo to our members, staff and community for your continuous support. Without our members and community who have entrusted us as their financial partner and our amazing staff committed to our members, we would not be where we are today.

Please pardon any dust and construction in the upcoming months. Areas of our Hilo parking area may be impacted by construction.

Great news___Is the report correct that the new building will house only administrative & support staff and no services for HFS members?

Reply

Posted by: Jesica

Mahalo William! Yes that is correct. With the growth we have experienced, we are in need of expanding our member-facing and support staff as well. By moving our administrative and support staff to the new building, we will be able to renovate our existing branch to make more room to expand our existing member services such as lending, operations, call center, and more. We are looking forward to these exciting changes in the upcoming years.

Will there be additional drive thru’s and safety deposit boxes?

Reply

Aloha Mavis – the new building will be for the administrative staff, so we won’t have any additional drive-thrus or safety deposit boxes there. We will be making updates to our existing Hilo branch in the future, but can’t say just yet what will be added or changed. Stay tuned!
