Simple Eats: Fat Tuesday Edition

Plate full of tasty malasadas

As hard as I try to make it to the store and pick up malasadas each year, it doesn’t usually happen and making them from scratch is no easy feat. Although it’s not exactly the same as the ones made from scratch, here’s a recipe for “Shortcut Malasadas” that will help you satisfy your malasada craving without all the prep time.

Shortcut Malasadas

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups Bisquick
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 5 slices bread, crusts removed (can also substitute hot dog buns in place of bread slices)
  • peanut or vegetable oil for frying

Directions:

  1. Combine first five ingredients and mix to make a batter. Remove the crusts from your bread slices and slice each into fourths. You can also use hot dog buns and cut them into thirds.
  2. Dip bread into the batter and fry in hot oil, either in a deep skillet or a fryer, a few at a time. Try to turn the donut only once. When golden brown, remove and drain on paper towels.
  3. In a clean brown paper bag, add 1/4 cup of sugar and toss the malasadas in the sugar until well coated. You can also put the sugar on a plate and roll the malasadas in it.
  4. For a twist, add 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon or even nutmeg to the sugar for a cinnamon sugar malasada!
  5. Enjoy!
